Acerola Cherry Side Effects
Acerola cherry is generally safe for most adults, but taking too much can cause some side effects:
- Diarrhea
- Digestive cramps
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headaches, including migraines
- Dizziness or fainting
- Flushed appearance
- Frequent urination
These side effects are relatively uncommon and tend to be mild. They are more likely to occur with very high doses of acerola cherry supplements. Simply lowering the dosage will likely make the symptoms go away.
In rare cases, very large amounts of acerola cherry over a long period of time may increase the risk of developing kidney stones. If you experience side or lower back pain, contact your doctor immediately as this could be a symptom.
Acerola cherry is safe to consume as a food. The only reported side effect when harvesting the fruit is a risk of contact dermatitis.
To avoid potential side effects, take acerola cherry supplements in milligram doses similar to vitamin C supplements and follow any label directions. Gradually decrease the dosage if you have been taking large amounts to prevent "rebound scurvy".
